Margao: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Thursday wrote to the power minister Nilesh Cabral to get the entire stretch of National Highway 17B from Arlem junction to Borim Bridge to be fitted with functional and permanent street lights.

In his letter, he has highlighted that around 8 km stretch of NH17B from Arlem circle, Raia to Borim Bridge especially the stretch from Tembia to Borim which is around 3 kms lies in pitch darkness.

The road was recently hot mixed, but the poles which were erected along the road have not been re-fitted with electric lamps. The old electricity poles were removed or uprooted due to hot-mixing work and have not been replaced with new ones.

“This road which passes through part of my Curtorim constituency consisting of Raia and Camorlim is an accident-prone zone and in the past, it has witnessed many deaths and causalities due to road accidents,” Lourenco stated in his letter.

The MLA further stated that “A lot a people have lost their lives due to the negligence of the PWD along the road.”

To avoid further hardships to the people of his constituency and the other commuters using this important road which connects Salcete to Ponda taluka, he requested the new power minister to treat this matter as the priority one and to get the entire stretch of NH 17B form Arlem junction to Borim bridge to be fitted with functional permanent street lights.
