Panaji: The Goa Congress party has demanded the resignation of sports Minister Manohar Azgoankar due to several failures in his department.
Azgaonkar should step down from the post as the State is likely to miss out hosting National Games 2018 in November, for failing to put in place the required sports infrastructure, the Congress said.
During a recent meeting held in New Delhi, the State delegation led by the Sports Minister had urged the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) executive council to postpone the 36th edition of National Games from November to February, next year. The State had informed the IOA of the lack of infrastructure requirement.
Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Sankalp Amonkar stated that Goa was selected as the host for the 36th National Games way back in 2014, however, till date it has not managed to put in place the required infrastructure for the games.
“Goa has become a joke on the national platform. We have miserably failed to create the required infrastructure for the Games and hence have sought postponement of games to February 2019. IOA is also very upset with the State government’s careless attitude,” Amonkar claimed.
Amonkar demanded that either the Chief Minister should sack Manohar Azgaonkar or he himself should step down accepting moral responsibility for the failure. “We demand that the government should ensure that the National Games are neither cancelled nor postponed,” he stated.
“Goans should not miss out the golden opportunity to show case their talent in their own land,” he said.
