New Delhi, Aug 7: In a punitive attack on the Narendra Modi government over the issue of women’s safety in India, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said that the Centre’s flagship programme ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ actually meant saving daughter from BJP MLAs.
Speaking at Mahila Adhikar Sammelan in the national capital, Gandhi said, “They said ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’. We didn’t understand who the daughters were to be saved from”.
“The daughters need to be saved from BJP MLAs,” he added.
Attacking PM Modi over his silence on the recent spike in incidents of minors being raped, including that of the ghastly Muzaffarpur shelter home case, Gandhi alleged that crime against women in the last four years under Modi government did not take place in the last 70 years.
“In UP and other BJP ruled states, when crimes are committed against women, PM Modi stays silent. No action is taken against the accused if he is a member of their party,” he said.
“What happened against women in these four years is something which didn’t happen even in last 70 years,” he added.
The Congress president also questioned the Centre over the delay in passage of Women’s Reservation Bill, claiming that the Grand Old Party will give full support if the bill is tabled in the Parliament.
“They talk a lot but Women’s Reservation Bill is long pending. Congress told them clearly that the entire party will stand by them the day they decide to pass it,” said Gandhi.
“If they table the Women’s Reservation Bill, we will give them full support but if they don’t, then as soon as Congress party comes to the power we will pass the bill,” he added.
Gandhi also blamed the BJP and the RSS for the women’s situation in the country, and accused them of attacking the institutions of the country. “The ideology of BJP and RSS is that only the men will run this country and if it is anywhere that the women belong, it is at the back. No institution is left that is not attacked by BJP and RSS,” he said.
Gandhi also promised to extend his party’s full support to the passage of the women reservation bill and said if the Modi government does not bring it, the Congress will do so soon after coming to power.
He also talked of empowering women within the Congress and bringing them forward in the organisation, for them to lead a state or the country one day. He promised to includes more women in central units of the AICC, saying “the country needs them”.
This comes hours after the Congress president, addressing the Congress parliamentary party meeting for the first time, attacked the BJP government over a host of issues ranging from agrarian crisis to the recently-published Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC).
He alleged that “corruption, economic failure, incompetence and spread of social divisiveness” are at its peak under the saffron party’s rule.
