Thanks to the BJP government’s lackadaisical attitude towards Goa and a CM who is on bed rest, Goa’s once pristine beaches are now filled with garbage and are stinking, said social activist and advocate Diya Shetkar, who is the President of the Goa Citizens’ Action Forum (GCAF).
While the Goa Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar has accused a private beach management agency of discontinuing its beach cleaning services when the tourism season has just started, the agency Drishti Marine, says they stopped cleaning up of beaches, as their work contract ended last month.
Why didn’t the tourism department not do the needful 3 months ago? Was the Tourism Minister sleeping all this while? When the contract was expiring, why weren’t tenders issued two months ago, Shetkar asked demanding the sacking of the Tourism Minister for gross inefficiency.
The agency people from Drishti have told me that they had informed the government well in advance about a month ago, that they would stop work and would not continue unless a proper work order was issued.
Quoting a Times of India report Shetkar said, “The sight of piles of garbage and bins spilling over greeted visitors to most Salcete beaches as the tourism department failed to make any arrangements to get rid of the accumulated waste for the third day. The worst hit is the Colva beach. At the entrance to the beach animals are seen scavenging and bad situation would only worsen in the next 2-3 days if the garbage is not cleared.”
